Sushil Gurung's Journey: Transforming Challenges into Hope

In the heart of Nepal, in the small village of Bankewa within Shuklagandki municipality, Tanahun, a young boy named Sushil Gurung faced a world of adversity from an incredibly young age. At just seven years old in 2020, Sushil’s life was marked by challenges that few can imagine. Born into a family grappling with severe hardships, including his father’s debilitating accident and his mother’s mental illness, the Gurungs found themselves in a precarious situation, unable to work or provide for their basic needs. This left Sushil, along with his older brother and younger sister, in a dire state, relying on the kindness of their community for shelter and facing an uncertain future.

Education, often seen as a gateway to opportunity, became another battleground for Sushil. His early attempts at schooling were fraught with difficulties; hunger drove him to steal food, leading to his expulsion. This incident underscored not just his desperate circumstances but also highlighted a systemic failure to support children in need. Subsequent attempts to continue his education in Kathmandu were thwarted by behavioral issues stemming from an undiagnosed condition, later identified as ADHD, casting a long shadow over his prospects for a normal life.

However, Sushil’s story took a hopeful turn when he met Ajay through his guide, Raj Kumar Shrestha. Ajay’s intervention opened new doors for Sushil, beginning with basic needs like ensuring he had lunch every day, to the more complex task of finding a school that could cater to his special needs. This journey led them to SERC School for Special Kids in Kathmandu, a place where Sushil found not just an education but a community that understood and nurtured him.

At SERC, nestled in the serene surroundings of Chapagaon, Lalitpur, Sushil began to thrive. The school, equipped to provide specialized support, including speech therapy and tailored educational programs, became a beacon of hope. Sushil’s remarkable progress in communication, self-care, and academics is a testament to the power of targeted interventions and the dedication of the staff at SERC.

The generosity of individuals from around the world, particularly Angelika, Alexander Baier, Elis, and other benevolent souls from Germany, has been a cornerstone of Sushil’s journey. Their support has extended beyond covering his tuition and living expenses, enriching his life with experiences and opportunities for personal growth, such as the joy of owning and riding his bicycle.

Looking to the future, the focus for Sushil is on equipping him with practical skills that can pave the way for a fulfilling and independent life. Vocational training in areas such as plumbing or electrical work is seen as a viable path, underscoring the importance of resilience and adaptability in facing life’s challenges.
